Books I Read Last Year
11:42 AM, by fanta kamaraWhen I was younger I used to read *all* the time. In fact, in sixth grade I won an award for reading the most books between 4th - 6th grade. I don't remember the exact number, but by the end of 6th grade, I had read over 500 books-- that's nearly a book a day! During summer break, my parents would my siblings and I to the library every Saturday. I still have vivid memories of returning a bag full of books and leaving with the same bag filled to brim with new books.
Like most people, once I got to high school I found that I didn't have enough time to read for fun. Between classes, homework, mandatory sports, and other extracurriculars, whenever I had free time, I wanted to hang out with my friends or sleep, not read. It also didn't help that my high school had a very rigorous English department. We read a lot of great books, but the essays left me burnt out. Sometimes, reading can just be that. Although, I do appreciate breaking a novel down and understanding the complex themes and context behind a writer's work.
When I was in college, reading *definitely* fell by the wayside. I majored in Health Science and the majority of my courses were in the sciences and Public Health. I took only two writing/English classes in college: one in my Freshman year of college and the other in my Senior year. Plus, I went to college out of state, so I never bothered to get a library card (I went the Boston Public Library in Copley Square my freshman year and tried to use my college ID as a proof of residency. It didn't work.)
Now that I'm finished with school, I have enough time outside of work to read. Although, I truly just want to sleep when I get home from work (pre-quarantine). As a result, I signed up for a Book of the Month subscription at the end of 2019. I will say, it has helped me rediscover my love of reading. Every month, I can choose one free book. In January, I get to choose two free add-ons: one of the five reader's choice books and the one I get as a birthday gift. I tend to read thrillers, romance and fiction (sometimes, I'll read historical fiction, although that genre tends to hit or miss). I've found that many of the books I've chosen have been pretty good; there have been some that I haven't been able to get through and need to give away.
I plan to use this lockdown/quarantine to read the books I received from previous months. I think have 12 books that haven't been touched *cringe*. Regardless, below are the BOTM books that I have finished reading since starting my subscription:
